The total number of cases of West Nile virus in the United States rose to 3142 and that of deaths to 134 in the latest set of national data released by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on 18 September.1 More than half of the cases (1630) were of the more serious neuroinvasive form.

More recent data from Texas, the state hardest hit by the disease,2 3 list 1303 cases of infection,4 including 636 cases of neuroinvasive disease and 61 deaths.
