Robert J Doig was born in Lennoxtown, Stirlingshire, the second son of Dr R S Doig (MBE, MD, MOH) and Lucienne, his French mother. When he was yet an infant the family moved to Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, where he grew up and received a first class education at the Nicolson Institute.
