Kenneth McLauchlan Stewart (“Ken”) was born in Dundee. He returned to India with his mother, only to be repatriated to the care of two maiden aunts in Carnoustie in order to start school. He attended Dundee High School with success, and on the mistaken advice of his chemistry teacher studied biochemistry rather than medicine at St Andrews University, graduating in 1949.
