Peter Pellew Hinds was born and brought up in Shanghai, China, until the impending Japanese invasion in 1935 forced him to be sent back to England to finish his schooling. His mother remained and was interned. He enlisted in the Royal Air Force in 1941, trained as a pilot, and was stationed in the Inner Hebrides, flying long range Halifax bombers.
