This line drawing comes from an animated film made by the Wellcome Trust to inform women about the pros and cons of female genital cosmetic surgery. The surgery, which consists in cutting back the inner labia, is usually performed in the private sector, but last year 2000 labiaplasties were carried out in the NHS, up from 400 in 2006.
The film, entitled Centrefold and created by Ellie Land, aims to document what is involved in the procedure and its varying outcomes. It follows the stories of three women aged 24 to 41.
It is accompanied by a short documentary containing interviews with Sarah Creighton, a gynaecologist at University College London Hospital, and Lih-Mei Liao, a psychologist at the same hospital.
Both films will be available for the public to download free online at www.thecentrefoldproject.org on Friday 20 July 2012.
