David R Bowsher was born in Wiltshire, in England, but he always insisted that he was Welsh, as was his mother. He had close relatives in Wales and latterly was learning the language.
He undertook medicine at the insistence of his father, a chemical pathologist, although his interest was always in the basic sciences around medicine.
