A fifth of women with breast cancer have a recurrence, new UK figures show

Just over one in every five women with diagnosed breast cancer has a recurrence of their cancer, show figures from a UK follow-up study reported this week.

Researchers retrospectively studied 1000 consecutive patients who were given a new diagnosis of invasive breast cancer in Leeds primary care trust between 1 January 1999 and March 2002. They were followed up for at least 10 years or until death if this occurred sooner.
