Morris was frustrated in his initial attempt to sign up when the second world war was declared and had to qualify first. During final year he worked at the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, volunteering for the hospital fire brigade, which “necessitated” drills practising rescues from the nursing residences.
