Brian Alec Latham was born in Leigh-on-Sea, Essex where he spent a happy childhood. There were no siblings. His was at school as a border at Bishops Stortford College, where he particularly enjoyed swimming, cricket, and taking part in theatrical productions. His extramural and social activities included cycling in the surrounding countryside, usually with the aim of visiting a country church, where he could not resist the temptation to try his hand at the organ. A special feature at the end of a trip was a determined hunt for a tea shop, a characteristic that remained with him on all feasible trips for the rest of his life.
