The largest ever research project into the causes and treatment of cleft lip and palate has been launched in the UK.
A cohort study hosted by the universities of Bristol and Manchester aims to recruit 3500 children born with cleft lip or palate over the next few years and follow them to adulthood.
Despite its frequency—more than 1000 cases a year in the UK, and one every three minutes worldwide—cleft is poorly understood, with little known about its causes and differences of opinion over the best treatments.
