Malignant melanoma is silent and notoriously difficult to spot in the early (thin Breslow) and curable stages - simple observation (eyeballing yourself) is not enough because imperceptible change fools the mind into thinking there is no alteration - reasonable quality photos, even with a mobile phone is the right way to self observe - I describe this technique fully on a free to access dermatology website www.dermatologist.co.uk - which also includes a photo library of suspicious and irregular features to be aware of
