Jack (“Jackie”) Gould was born of Polish Jewish immigrant parents, Joe and Gertrude, on in Liverpool and named after the child actor Jackie Coogan. He attended St Margaret’s School, then the Liverpool Institute, where, driven by admiration for his Prussian soldier grandfather, he became an enthusiastic, forthright, and immaculate member of the institute’s officer training corps. Although he had a deep seated desire to be a professional soldier, he qualified in medicine, obtaining gold medal and distinction, in anatomy.
