John Loakes joined the Alma Road surgery in Winton in 1961 and practised there for 30 years. He was an early enthusiast for vocational training, becoming a highly regarded trainer, course organiser, and associate adviser in general practice. He was elected provost of the Wessex Faculty of the Royal College of General Practitioners in 1984.

John was a renowned country walker, covering great distances throughout Dorset with his much loved golden retriever, Barney. His trainees remember toiling up hills behind him and readily forgave him for his false assurances of only one more mile to go.

He had an extensive knowledge of natural history and served as a volunteer warden on Brownsea Island. His retirement years were devoted to Janet and his grandchildren, whom he entertained with many inventive stories, tricks, and games.
