I grew up in a household of boys. We cleaned and cooked; we were domesticated beasts. But we also fought, teased, wrestled, and swore. And at school, teachers shouted and belted us. Then, for boys and girls alike, crying was not an option: no one wanted to be a “cry baby” for the rest of their school career. Neither did we tell on bullies, as fighting back was the prevailing psychological intervention of the 1980s. But my generation were wet blankets, compared with previous generations.
