Raleigh Barclay Lucas was born in Edinburgh. His mother died when he was only a year old, so he was cared for by his aunt. He was educated at George Watson’s School in Edinburgh, later attending the medical school in his home town. He held numerous posts, including a period on the Shetland Islands as the sole medical officer. At the start of the war he enrolled as in the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC).
