Born in Manchester, Kenneth Fowler Wood (“Ken”) was a true general surgeon. He recalled how, when he was a senior registrar in Sheffield, he repaired aortic aneurysms with a synthetic mesh, woven by nurses in a theatre annexe. Ambidexterity complimented his surgical skills. He once filled his own troublesome tooth.
