NHS chief is confident that only 20 trusts will not achieve foundation status by 2014

The chief executive of the NHS, David Nicholson, has told MPs that he is confident that no more than 20 trusts will be unable to reach foundation trust status.

Professor Nicholson was giving evidence to members of the public accounts parliamentary select committee, who were questioning him after the release of a report by the National Audit Office last week, which said that “at least 20 trusts” would be unable to attain foundation status (BMJ 2011; 343:d6642, doi:10.1136/bmj.d6642) because of financial, clinical, or governance problems.
