John Gloster was born on 23 March 1922 in Coventry, where he attended King Henry VIII Grammar School, gaining two major scholarships to Jesus College, Cambridge. He read triple sciences and went on to do medicine at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, London, where he qualified in 1946.
