John Vernon Thurston was born in London in 1923, and was educated at Falconbury Preparatory School in Bexhill, and Haileybury College in Hertford. He went on to St Mary’s Medical School and qualified in 1945. After two years’ service in the Royal Air Force, he undertook various GP assistant posts before travelling out to Trinidad in 1950 to work as medical officer for the Shell oil company.
