Leading HIV prevention organisations in the United States have issued a “call to action” to develop a comprehensive plan for use of antiretrovirals to prevent new cases of HIV among the groups at highest risk of infection.
The idea of giving antiretrovirals to people who are at a high risk of contracting HIV is known as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) and has proved effective in recent studies (BMJ 2011;343:d4540, 15 Jul, doi:10.1136/bmj.d4540). Now the groups are asking the US Department of Health and Human Services to develop demonstration projects to identify how and where the expensive intervention may best be used.
