Report questioning intensive blood glucose control in type 2 diabetes sparks row

The German Diabetes Association (DDG) has criticised a so called “rapid report” from Germany’s drug evaluation agency suggesting that the evidence on the health benefits of lowering blood glucose concentrations to near normal in patients with type 2 diabetes is inconclusive.
The report, published on 5 July by the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (known in Germany as IQWIG), said that the question of whether patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus benefit from “intensive blood glucose control” remains “unanswered.” It added, “The studies currently available provide indications of a benefit but also of potential harm.”
