Our daughter got married at the end of May. The date was decided long before William and Kate announced their own plans, and we were lucky that the royal couple chose April. I was able to sit in front of the television, hankie at the ready, picking up hints on how a bride’s father should behave. Calm, supportive, dignified, and immaculate: check.

I suspect, however, that Mr Middleton did not have to tie the ribbons onto his car …
