Edward Stuart Mucklow (“Ted”) was born in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire, on 24 January 1932, son of Drs Stuart and Alex Mucklow, and was educated at Cheltenham Junior School, Radley College, Exeter College, Oxford, and University College Hospital Medical School, London, where he was awarded a Goldsmid Entrance Scholarship. He took BA in physiology in 1954 at Oxford, and qualified BM BCh (Oxon) from UCH in December 1957. After house jobs in surgery and medicine at UCH, he was appointed ship’s surgeon to the cable ship CS Ocean Layer on a Brazilian cable laying expedition—a great adventure. He returned to further posts at the Royal Postgraduate Medical School, Hammersmith Hospital, and UCH before being called up for national service for two years. Ted was posted as a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps to the depot and TE at Church Crookham, near Aldershot, where he had experience of general practice and captained RAMC teams in a variety of sports.
