Peter Chong was born in Sarikei, rural Borneo, and moved to Kuching to attend secondary school. He came to Glasgow in 1958 to attend medical school, where he went on to meet his wife, Catriona, in the city’s Victoria Infirmary. They moved back to Kuching in 1966 and had six sons, two of whom followed him into medicine.
