In this head to head debate (BMJ 2011;343:d4205, doi:10.1136/bmj.d4205), Nicholas Mays refers to a study by Cooper et al showing that competition reduces mortality from acute myocardial infarction by 0.2–0.3%. In fact the study found a reduction of 0.32 percentage points a year, resulting in a 6.7% relative reduction over three years.
