The American Medical Association, which now represents less than a quarter of US doctors, last week beat back an attempt to revoke its support for the health reform bill passed on 21 March 2010 (BMJ 2010;340;c1635, doi:10.1136/bmj.c1635).
The AMA’s support of health reform, which it had opposed in the past, was crucial to passage of the bill last year. The association has taken a position in favour of President Barack Obama’s health reform since July 2009.
