Nigel John Paul Lehmann, born in 1935, the son of a general practitioner in Wickham Market, Suffolk, attended Framlingham College, Suffolk, and St George’s School, Harpenden, before going up to Selwyn College, Cambridge. He moved to St Bartholomew’s, London, for his clinical years then house posts at Redhill General Hospital, Surrey, where he met his wife, Julia, a senior midwife. He trained …
