Poor nutrition is increasing rates of overweight in developing countries

The World Health Organization has called on governments to do more to prevent malnutrition passing from one generation to the next by improving food provision and addressing inequality through taxation, legislation, and agricultural, social and trade policies.

In particular, the food industry needs to be encouraged to improve the nutritional quality of its products, for example, by replacing trans fats with healthier fats, by better product labelling, and by adhering to stricter rules on marketing.

The messages came from the more than 60 experts on the WHO Nutrition Guidance Expert Advisory Group who convened in Geneva this week to look at the increasing double burden of malnutrition posed by under-nutrition and overweight. The group will publish guidance on its findings in May.
