Richard John Pugh, known as Dick, was born in Cricklewood, London, but soon moved with his family to Welshpool, to grow up above his father’s chemist shop.
On qualifying as a doctor, Richard served as a squadron leader in the Royal Air Force and was stationed in Germany for two years. He then trained as a paediatrician at Great Ormond Street, London, and, after six years as a senior lecturer in Leeds at Leeds General Infirmary and at St James’s Hospital, he took up a consultant post at Hull Royal Infirmary.
