Ronald Michael Vanreenen (“Mike”) was born in India, where his father was surgeon in the Indian Medical Service. The Vanreenen name could be traced back to the earliest Dutch trekkers and explorers in South Africa. Mike enjoyed three related careers in medicine.

After boarding school at Glenalmond in Perthshire he graduated in medicine from Glasgow University in 1940.
