Nigeria’s cholera epidemic escalates: More than 38 000 people contracted cholera and 1555 have died so far this year in Nigeria’s ongoing epidemic, a sharp rise on the 13 691 cases reported in 2009, says Unicef. The case fatality rate was 4.5% overall but as high as 20% in states severely affected by flooding or that had large numbers of internally displaced people.
