East Burma is in health crisis: The health of people in eastern Burma is among the worst in the world, says a study that found that 40% of children are malnourished and one in seven die before the age of 5. The report, Diagnosis Critical (www.backpackteam.org), says that maternal mortality in the region is triple the national average. Abuses of human rights of a third of those surveyed, including forced labour and displacement, are a major factor in the health crisis, it says.
