John Anthony Dyde (“Tony”) was born in Plymouth to John Horsfall Dyde and Ethel May Dyde (née Hewitt). His father was one of the officers in the gas industry responsible for bringing North Sea natural gas to Britain. He rose to become chairman of Eastern Gas Board and was awarded an OBE and later appointed CBE.
Tony was educated at Rugby School from an early age as a result of the damage to Plymouth at the beginning of the second world war. He remained at Rugby, in Michell House, achieving well academically. He was a superb all round ball player, excelling at cricket, hockey, and rugby football. He went up …
