Researchers and clinicians are troubled by a new genetic segment that confers resistance to virtually all of the β lactam class of antibiotics. The plasmid, called New Delhi metallo-ß-lactamase-1 (NDM-1), was first identified in Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae and seems to be readily exchanged between a variety of bacteria.
It was the focus of presentations at the 50th interscience conference on antimicrobial agents and chemotherapy in Boston on 12-15 September.
NDM-1 was first detected in a patient in the United Kingdom who had gone to India for surgery. Other examples of infection with the plasmid have since been identified in Canada, Australia, Kenya, and other European countries, all with some link to countries on …
