US consumer groups call for food safety bill: The Center for Science in the Public Interest and other groups have called on the Senate to pass a food safety bill approved by the House of Representatives over a year ago. The bill sets rules for food manufacturers and allows the Food and Drug Administration to inspect food processing facilities. The past year has seen 85 food recalls linked to at least 1850 illnesses, including the recent recall of eggs contaminated with salmonella.
