European drug agency calls for more ethical trials in developing countries

    Drug firms and doctors are continuing to conduct unethical research in developing countries, a major conference heard on 7 September.

    The claim emerged at a meeting of the European Medicines Agency’s working group on “third country” clinical trials, as it published a major discussion paper highlighting areas that need urgent attention, together with recommendations for action.

    Fergus Sweeney, head of compliance and inspection at the agency’s patient health protection unit, said that three important issues emerged at the two day conference, which was attended by regulators, researchers, and patients’ representatives: the need for much greater cooperation between regulators and other parties, including patients’ representatives and ethics committees; …
