Nadia ElGaylani was born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1962. After completing her primary and secondary education in Baghdad, she travelled to Dublin to join the medical school of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland in 1979.
After qualifying in 1985 with an honours degree and winning the Desmond Lions medal for medicine, she commenced her postgraduate training in the Republic of Ireland.
