People admitted to hospital for type 2 diabetes in Sweden have an increased risk of developing cancer. Data from over 125 000 patients admitted between 1964 and 2007 suggest that the profound metabolic disturbances of unmanaged diabetes may lead to cancer development. The highest risks were found for liver and pancreatic cancers. No excess risk of cancer was seen for people with familial diabetes. The authors say they can’t explain why prostate cancer comes in with the lowest risk (Oncologist 2010;15:548-55, doi:10.1634/theoncologist.2009-0300).
