Trust missed breast cancer in eight women, review finds

    A trust failed to identify breast cancer in eight women who had been screened, an independent review has found.

    All the women are now being treated by the North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust in Cumbria, where the screening failings emerged last month.

    Screening experts have said the case is not typical and is one of a handful of instances over the past 20 years.

    Last month the trust announced that breast cancer screening was being temporarily halted for a major review to be carried out after the regional screening programme’s quality assurance team raised concerns.
