Isoniazid resistance and death in patients with tuberculous meningitis: retrospective cohort study
BMJ 2010; 341 :c4451
doi:10.1136/bmj.c4451
The emergence of isoniazid resistance
This study showed a relatively high prevalence of isoniazid resistance.
Isoniazid is the first line medication in treating tuberculosis, and it is
formed in fixed drug combination with other anti-tuberculosis drugs. The
use of an empirically expanded regimen for seriously ill patients should
be performed when drug resistance is suspected. There is an increased risk
of death in patients with tuberculous meningitis and initial isoniazid
resistance. Identification of risk factors for isoniazid resistance should
be performed. Further trials are needed to evaluate the optimal empirical
regimen for patients with tuberculous meningitis.
