Decision to dismiss head of German NICE is “shabby,” says MP

    Opposition parties have accused the German government of bowing to pressure from the drug industry over its decision to dismiss the head of the country’s healthcare quality and efficiency body. One MP called the decision “shabby.”

    Peter Sawicki’s tenure as director of the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care will not be prolonged beyond 31 August 2010, and a new director will be installed on 1 September. Earlier this month more than 600 doctors signed a petition in support of Dr Sawicki remaining in post (BMJ 2010;340:c318, 18 Jan, doi:10.1136/bmj.c318). …
