Bernard Vincent Lee came from a well-known Manchester family, which had given two Lord Mayors to the city. He began his medical career by undertaking ear, nose, and throat surgery, starting with house appointments at Manchester Royal Infirmary and later working in this specialty at Wythenshawe Hospital. He did his national service as a medical officer in the Royal Air Force, after which he worked for eight years in general practice in Carlisle.
