Progress on meeting the United Nations’ millennium development goals by 2015 “has been uneven,” the UN chief, Ban Ki-moon, warned on Wednesday 23 June. Progress on some targets, such as lowering child and maternal mortality has been too slow, and other targets, such as efforts to cut hunger, have seen backsliding.
The secretary general acknowledged that the global economic crisis had affected the capacity of nations to support the goals, but he told reporters at a press conference that the economic crisis could not be used as “an excuse to slow down our development efforts—it is a reason to speed them up.”
