    About 600 German doctors have signed a petition in support of Peter Sawicki, whose role as head of the country’s healthcare quality and efficiency body is in jeopardy.

    Dr Sawicki has been director of the Institute for Quality and Efficiency in Health Care (IQWiG), Germany’s equivalent of the UK National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence, since it was established in September 2004. But his contract runs out in August 2010 and may not be renewed by the country’s new health minister.
