Joyce Mary Owen (née Scholefield) attended Liverpool University from 1932 until qualifying in 1938. She then worked in various hospitals in Liverpool, including Myrtle Street and Alder Hey. The outbreak of war in 1939, with many doctors seconded to the armed forces, saw her tackle more senior roles than she would have been qualified to do in peacetime.
