The US state of Nebraska passed two laws restricting abortion last week. One law prohibits abortion after 20 weeks, because the fetus might feel pain. A second law requires doctors to examine women for mental or physical risks associated with abortion and ask whether they are voluntarily choosing an abortion 24 hours before the procedure is carried out.
The laws, which take effect on 15 October, will make it more difficult for women to have an abortion in Nebraska. The laws are likely to be challenged and may make their way to the US Supreme Court.
