The health secretary for England has ordered an independent review into how the NHS transplant authority recorded incorrect information on which organs registered donors were willing to donate, after the organisation reported errors in its organ donor register this week.
NHS Blood and Transplant, the special health authority that manages transplantation services, said that the error meant that there were 21 cases over the past six years of registered donors who have died and donated organs for which they may not have given permission.
