UK neonatal researchers reported positive early results this week from the experimental treatment of a newborn baby with xenon inhalation in addition to cooling to prevent brain injury after a lack of oxygen at birth.
The baby boy, Riley Joyce, was born to a healthy mother after a normal pregnancy but had no pulse and was not breathing when he was delivered by emergency caesarean section.
Marianne Thoresen, professor of neonatal neuroscience at the University of Bristol and one of the researchers who developed the xenon treatment, said, “It was the typical story with sudden unexpected fetal distress ending in emergency caesarian section.
