Peter Julius Denison Heaf was a chest physician at University College Hospital (UCH), London, for 28 years. He started his medical training in 1940 at UCH Medical School, then sited in Bangor during the evacuation. His lifelong interest in chest medicine started almost by default, as after qualifying in 1946 he was posted to the chest wards at UCH, which were considered the best place for him as his father was a well-known chest physician.
