    Donald Barltrop had junior appointments at Charing Cross, Great Ormond Street, Brompton, and St Mary’s Hospitals. This was followed by national service, where he attained the rank of captain.

    While a registrar at St Mary’s he developed an interest in childhood lead poisoning, which was the subject of his MD thesis.

    He was awarded a Fulbright scholarship and spent a year on exchange at Boston Children’s Hospital, where he continued his research on the exposure of children …
